A DAY IN NATURE
ZGORNJA IDRIJCA NATURAL PARK
You will be overwhelmed by the beauty of nature along the picturesque footpaths to the water springs.
Visit the unique Divje jezero (‘Wild Lake’), enclosed by steep precipice rocks. The emerald water is usually still but after heavy rainfall, the underground karst spring spews out large quantities of water, which is why the lake was named wild.
The lake is home to trout and the cave system to the famous ‘human fish’ (Proteus anguinus). The surroundings of the lake are known for an exceptional diversity of flora. There are several endemic plants, with the most outstanding Carniolan primrose (Primula carniolica). Only 50 metres long the Jezernica river, which is the shortest Slovenian river, flows out from the Divje jezero lake.
The road passing by the lake leads to the heart of the Natural Park where you can admire the beauty of the pools of the Idrijca and Belca rivers. In summer, they are a popular refreshment spot. At the confluence of the two rivers, you can take the left road, along the Belca river, or the right one along the Idrijca river, until you reach the famous water barrages, called klavže. The area is also known by its geological diversity and is rich with fossils.
TOUR THE PLATEAU
IDRIJSKE KRNICE
Take a tour to a village on the plateau above the Kanomljica valley.
The first kilometres from the Kanomlja valley to Idrijske Krnice will be quite steep as you will need to conquer more than seven hundred meters of altitude difference; but the beauty of the plateau, the softness of the hilly landscape, the view towards the 1107 m high Jelenk and the beautiful sunsets will pay off your efforts.
The farms in the picturesque village produce excellent cheese and dairy products from cow’s milk, and organically grown herbs for herbal teas which you can also try by prior arrangement. The village with around 140 inhabitants has been known for their long tradition of charcoal making too.
